Yohimbe, The herbal viagra

Yohimbe
(herbal Viagra) is an herbal product that is extracted from the inner bark of an evergreen tree found in West Africa. The active component, (yohimbine) is sold as a prescription drug to treat male impotency. The herbal version (a much less active substance) is sold over-the-counter and makes claims to produce similar results in treating male impotency.
This herb is said to expand the blood vessels in the penis and increase blood flow.
This substance improves libido in men and increases sexual response in women. Yohimbe increases ejaculation amount as well as improve frequency stamina and strength of an erection.
It is important to keep in mind that the herb may contain only a very low concentrated amount of the actual ingredient yohimbine. In fact one study tested 26 commercial products containing the herb version and revealed that almost no active yohimbine was present.

Many people confuse the herb with the prescription product, yohimbine but it is important to realize that they are not the same. In fact, I know of no scientific research that substantiates any of the claims made by the herbal product. There is some data to support the claims made by the prescription.
To take it or not to take it…that is the dilemma. It seems that the longer the life expectancy, the more the demand for sexual enhancing herbal products or pharmaceutical
drugs that will help yield above the ordinary sexual performance. The question is does the risk out-weigh the benefits?
Caution This is a potent stimulating substance and is suspected in having
caused a variety of side effects. Among those are: agitation, anxiety, appetite reduction, high blood pressure, kidney, liver and ulcer disease, increase heart rate, increased urination, painful urination, sweating, palpitations, insomnia and changes in heart rhythm. This product can also interfere with blood-pressure medication and heighten the effects of MAO inhibitors (antidepressants drugs).
Clearly this is a substance that requires the direct involvement of a physician and self-medication should not be an option.
