Royal jelly
is a natural nutritional product that is produced from the secretion of the nurse honeybee, further used in the nutritional nurturing of the larvae. The nutritional benefits of this product is said to be equivalent of another well known super food provided by the honeybee called
bee pollen.
One key difference between these two products is the that later is not actually produced by the bee but is rather collected from the blossoms of flowering plants. When honey and pollen are combined and refined within these young nurse bees, royal jelly is created.
Secreted from the tops of the head of the nurse bee, this substance is only fed to the young larvae during the development stages while the queen bee is on this diet her entire life cycle. The significance here is that a bee fed this substance will increase in body weight many folds over and the queen bee will double the size the normal bee.
Another significant point is that the average worker bee is approximately 40 days, while the queen bee will survive for up to 6 years and procreate her entire life span. Does this increased life span suggest that the queen bee’s diet is the secret to her longevity? Does the highly concentrated contents of this product promote longevity beyond the bee? Can other living forms of life benefit also?
In one study of mice that were fed royal jelly it was revealed that the animal’s life span actually increased over the 16-week period in which the study was conducted. This was possibly due to a reduction in the oxidative damage done to cells and tissues. We'll take a look at the composition of this so-called super food and you be the judge.
