Rheumatoid Arthritis, Symptoms and Causes

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system attacks joint tissue releasing antibodies and other chemicals that cause pain, swelling and damage.

There is no known cause for the disease but it is suspected that genetics is a major factor. There is no consistency to substantiate that genetics will determine who is susceptible. There are, however, a host of reasons why flare-ups are triggered these include, smoking, viral infections, food allergies etc. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the membrane linings around the joints (i.e., the knees) become inflamed and the joint surfaces, especially tendons, become malformed, distorted or even broken.

Each case differs with each individual; the symptoms will also vary and include aching and stiff joints, soreness and fatigue. The hands and wrist joints are affected and will give a burning sensation accompanied with swelling, tenderness and difficulties in movement. arthritis symptoms are present when you awake (usually stiffness, accompanied with some pain) but will allow for some flexibility as the day progresses. The down side is that as you become more flexible, fatigue will typically start to occur.

Presently there are no known cures for this disease, the most one can hope for, in terms of treatment, is the relief of pain or the reduction of pain swelling and inflammation. Treatment is done on an individual bases as the affects of the disease will vary with each individual.

It is this writer’s opinion that the best treatment is diet (which should exclude as many things it includes) physical activity and consulting a physician who specialize in rheumatoid arthritis. It is also wise to keep abreast of current research.

There is much documentation that suggests staying away from caffeine, alcohol, (especially wine) tobacco and processed foods. Products said to be beneficial are foods of the nightshade family such as peppers, eggplant, potatoes and vegetable juices. Included among the more favorable items are oily fish products, which contain fatty acids (anti-inflammatory omega 3.)

By now you should be thinking that a vegetarian diet might lessen the symptoms. A low caloric intake also appears to be a form of treatment.

Studies suggest that those suffering from various forms of this disease have low levels of antioxidant vitamins and minerals. This may be an indication of some venerability to inflammation as well. Sufferers have higher levels of free radicals in their blood and joint fluids. The possibility that the antioxidants in the blood are being used to combat free radicals does exit. There is proof that increasing Intake of antioxidants can be beneficial in reducing inflammation and slowing joint lining damage.
