Red rice yeast
(monascus rice)is a food product that is created using the art of fermentation. Rice is fermented with a strain of red yeast and the end result is a functional food product. On the page labeled
Super Food
, I make an effort to distinguish between functional foods and super foods using the example that functional foods are usually altered or processed where as, super foods usually remain in their natural state.
Wikipedia describes
Functional foods
as any fresh or processed food that claim to have a health promoting and/or disease-preventing properties beyond basic nutrition function of supplying nutrients. Some functional foods are fermented foods with live cultures; this food product qualifies as part of the functional food group for that reason. Fermentation is a common practice in the Far East and this product has been long used in China and Japan as a food and remedy for digestive issues and poor circulation.
Many food products start out as just that, a food product, but end up in capsule or pill form. Such is the case with red rice yeast. In addition to being considered to be effective in treating poor circulation and digestion, recent studies have shown that this product reduces overall
blood cholesterol levels
by as much as 40 points over a period of 12 weeks.
This supplement(also sold under the bran name Cholestin) contains a number of cholesterol lowering compounds known as statins. Statin is also a sold as a prescription drug. If you or someone you know is taking the drug statin and can not afford it, you may consider consulting your physician about making a switch. The chemical structure of Cholestin is said to be similar to statin but is less than half the cost.
At one point the FDA tried to ban the supplement Cholestin by calling it a drug, but this did not hold water in court and the product is still being sold. There is no figuring why the FDA would try to ban a safe product that costs less than a prescription drug and is as safe, if not safer, than the drug.
