Omega 3, A Therapeutic Wonder Supplement

Originally designed, as Vitamin K, Omega 3 is one of 2 essential fatty acid (EFA) family members, with the other member being Omega 6. Essential fatty acids are involved in the metabolic process, production of energy, the transferring of oxygen to the bloodstream etc. They also play a role in nerve function and cell division. High concentrations are found in the brain and are essential for normal nerve impulse and transmission to the brain. There is evidence that essential fatty acid, antioxidants, and a variety of other health supplements may be a significant factor in the treatment and prevention of various illness and disease. In fact, studies have shown that in countries where there are high consumptions of fish in the diet, the risk for heart disease is substantially reduced.

Omega 3 fish Diets low in fatty acids may also contribute to the development of rheumatoid arthritis. Recent studies show that people with rheumatoid arthritis who take regular doses of this supplement reported fewer number of tender joints and shorter periods of morning stiffness. Although many of those involved were able to stop taking anti-inflammatory medicines for reasonably long periods of time, it is not recommended that you do this without consulting a physician.

omega 3 is abundant in seafood; especially fish, with cold-water types being the most abundant in this particular nutrient. Other sources are nuts, soybeans, tofu and canola oil. If none of these sources appeal to you and are not likely to appear in your diet, then a good alternative is fish oil capsules. Caution should be used when one decides to obtain fatty acid via supplement because fish oil in capsule form is more concentrated and could lead to an overdose. Overdose can affect your immune system, change your blood fat cell levels and make one more susceptible to infections and cancer. The advice here is to not take too much. Read the daily amounts recommended on the bottle and be careful not to exceed that amount. This will usually be around 3 to 5 grams per day. Some Possible affects of omega 3:

· May protect against strokes · May protect against coronary heart disease · Impede blood clotting · Potential anti-inflammatory · May improve immune response (caution of overdose having the opposite affect) · May protect against arteriosclerosis
