Niacin benefits
can best be described as potentially life saving, preserving and protecting against life threatening conditions depending on ones health or state of wellbeing. Niacin is a water soluble Vitamin, also referred to as Vitamin B3, Nicotinic acid and Niacinamide (because they are a member of the same molecule family and have a common biochemical activity). Niacin is needed for healthy skin, proper circulation and many other things that allow the body to operate at optimum levels of health. It is important to point out and keep in mind that although niacinamide and niacin are identical in their vitamin activity, they are not the same in a pharmacological capacity.
One distinct difference and subsequent benefit that separates niacin from Niacinamide is the fact that the latter (Niacin) has the ability to cut
Cholesterol
A solid benefit inherent in Niacin is its proven ability not only to reduce cholesterol, but also triglycerides, all low density levels of lipoproteins
(LDL,
also know as bad cholesterol) as well as raise high-density-levels
(HDL)
also known as good cholesterol) levels.
High doses of extended-release niacin for cholesterol lowering is an approach used by some nutritionist and physicians. Nicotinic acid can be purchased over-the-counter but physicians will typically prescribe the timed-released or extended-release version. This type of niacin is not the dietary Niacin. There is only one extended-release type that is approved for cholesterol control that I am aware of (Niaspan) and a company called Kos Pharmaceuticals produces it. Buffered Niacin is what you will typically find on the store shelves.
Niacin benefits also include the aiding and support of the nervous system; like other B Vitamins, Niacin is essential in the manufacturing of enzymes that provide cells with energy through tissues respiration and carbohydrates, proteins fats and metabolism; and in the production of hydrochloric acid for the digestive system.
Nicotinic acid is not limited to the direct treatment of lowering cholesterol as it can also enhance the effects of other cholesterol lowing supplements and medications and is often prescribed with or manufactured with certain products for the very purpose of enhancement
A newer form of Niacin known as inositol bound niacin or inositol hexanicotinate is sold and is thought to be safer as it does not cause damage to the liver.
