Melatonin side effects, Are there cons?

Melatonin clock

Melatonin side effects are few, which should be good to those who would prefer a natural sleep aid to prescription drugs. I have not been able to locate data or research that indicate there is a toxic level for this supplement either. It is however, important to keep in mind that melatonin is a powerful hormone and there are a few nutritionists, researchers and various other natural professionals who would not advise you to ingest this product for lack of data or research on these supplements.

The pros most definitely outweigh the cons surrounding this supplement! The more you delve into researching this product, the more you will find it to be more beneficial than there are Melatonin side effects. For a complete description of this supplement, I have outlined in detail its benefits in a page labeled Melatonin on this website.

If you are concerned about toxicity then relax because even at high doses, toxicity is infrequent. This is not to suggest that you should be taking a high dose and keep in mind that tolerance will become a factor should you decid to take a high dose. Doses should be limited to what is effective and not beyond that threshold. If there is frequent use of Melatonin, then tolerance becomes even more of a factor. Altering dose amounts or altering dosage by rotating nights that you take Melatonin accomplishes avoiding the creeping up of tolerance.

Melatonin side effects ironically can also create insomnia as well as cure it. One must always be mindful not to build up a tolerance that could reverse what one is trying to treat. Long-term use of Melatonin is bound to bring about some adverse reactions but it is very difficult to say what that reaction might be. There have been reports of vivid dreams that manifest into almost conscious state where the individual will get a full 8 hours of sleep but not feel rested. Others have also reported the opposite and sleep too deeply. There may be a feeling of grogginess once awake. Next day grogginess will most likely wear off, but do not chance driving if this feeling does not go away.

It is not uncommon to awake in the middle of the night feeling revived, energetic and ready to go. Experiencing a false sense of completed rest is not uncommon either. If you find yourself awake in the middle of the night then try and settle in to finish completing your nights sleep. This is something that I have experienced from time to time. I find that staying in bed if this happens is the best approach to falling back to sleep.

Although pills and capsules are the most common forms available for this product, powders and teas are also quite common. I have seen a few companies that offer a blend of several natural sleep aids, one of which I have tried and absolutely love.

Other Melatonin side effects: Low moods, possible nightmares, psychedelic dreams, fatigue and tiredness.

High blood pressure: I have read reports that suggest that one of Melatonin's side effects is that it will lower blood pressure while others suggest that it will raise blood pressure. If you either suspect or know that you have high blood pressure then you are advised to consult your physician prior to taking melatonin.
