Lutein, Protecting your eye sight

Macular degeneration

Lutein can best be the described as the Seeing Eye supplement because it can protect your eyes from two serious eyes conditions: know as Cataracts and Macular Degeneration. This is a natural pigmented substance found in such food as yellow fruits, egg yolks and green leafy vegetables. As a matter of fact, it is more abundant in green vegetables than any other food source. Lutein, like beta-carotene is a carotenoid and is proven to be most effective in protecting the body against the harmful effects of cell and tissue-damaging free radicals.

Carotenoid is a substance found in plants, also called pro-vitamins, which means they are stored in the liver and converted into usable vitamins. Of the 700 carotenoids on earth, only 60 can be found in food and of those 60, only 6 are included in our diet. The other 5 are listed below:

· Alpha-carotene

· Beta- carotene

· Cryptoxanthin

· Lycopene

· Zeaxanthin

This carotenoid is contained within the retina of the eye. It helps the eye absorb light and also protects against free radical damage. There is also evidence that this substance may protect against certain forms of cancer. There are various types of supplement so consult your physician prior to taking any form of this substance.
